This is a quiet family neighborhood of single family homes, with friendly neighbors and a convenient location. There is easy on-street parking, a bus line one  block away (Georgia Avenue bus), and the Metro train a 12 minute walk away (Takoma station on the Red Line).
The Shepherd Park section of Washington, DC is about as far north as you can go and still be in Washington; the State of Maryland border is a ten minute walk. Another ten minutes (~1 mile total) places you in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, which is the home of the American Film Institute's Silver Theatre, showing art and new release movies. Also in downtown Silver Spring are Thai, Burmese, Ethiopian, Indian, Salvadoran, Italian, and several pubs.
To the West is Rock Creek Park, a 7 mile long park that goes from the Maryland  border to downtown Washington, terminating at the Kennedy Center, Georgetown, and the various memorials (Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, WW II, Vietnam).   Our home is a ten mimute walk from one of the entrances to the park.  There is picnicing, hiking, and, best of all, the roads are closed to traffic during the weekends.
 To the east, the Metro train system is a 12 minute walk, and a few minutes farther east is downtown Takoma Park, with live music, a weekend farmer's market, a Lebanese restaurant, an ice cream shoppe, and several other unique shops.
