Currently waiting to have a new water filteration system installed so not doing exchanges till that is done. Sorry for any inconvenience. We are only interested in home exchanges within Ireland for Summer 2021 but in the future we are open to international home exchanges. We are also interested in home exchanges within Ireland during shorter school holidays..

A cosy, open-plan family home on the Sheep's Head peninsular in popular West Cork on the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland.

Location, location, location! What our home lacks in luxury it makes up for in location. Situated at the foot of one of Ireland’s most stunning walks, the Sheep’s Head Way, in popular holiday spot West Cork, our house is nestled in the area of Coomkeen - which means ‘Gentle Valley’ (or "Peaceful Valley") in Irish. This is a hiker's paradise - a hiker's holiday! The Sheep’s Head peninsular is on the Wild Atlantic Way where you will find an un-spoilt natural landscape with stunning coastal views. This is a place that’s been recognised as a European Destination of Excellence. West Cork is a very desirable location for holidays in the South-West of Ireland (the Irish Riviera) and gets very busy in August. But you could have peace & quiet in this house even at peak season! Here you can enjoy the magic of West Cork in the heart of West Cork.

Our house is situated on 1 acre of land. It has a yard and a pro basketball hoop perfect for kids and teens. Our house is open plan with a 200m square floor plan. It is rustic with wooden floors, a wood-burning stove, rugs and a cosy sitting room. We have wifi (a bit slow), a washing machine, utility, kitchen, living room, 3 bedrooms, (the master bedroom has en suite) shower, bathroom. Could comfortably sleep 4 or 5 people. Our house was built in 2006. I am a lover of old houses, old stuff and ethnic vibes so my house is quite eclectic inside. I will add more photoes when I get the patio completed.

There is an upstairs but at present it is an attic storage and music studio space some of which I may convert into another sleeping area in the future. So for now the upstairs would be not in use for the home exchange as it is for storage. The house has had a lot of wear and tear from kids and pets over the years. I have slowly been redecorating it. The house and yard is a work in progress so not perfect by any stretch of the imagination! If you are looking for super luxury we might not be your best bet. Our house is mid-range and a bit rough and ready! After all, it is the Wild West around these parts!! It is a perfect house for Summer holidays but a bit more work in Winter as the stove needs to be lit for heating. But once it is going it kicks out a lot of heat.

Our home is just a stone's throw across the valley from the famous Durrus Cheese https://vimeo.com/376777663

NOTE: I do allow animals on the home exchange but do not allow them on the sofas (unless there is a blanket covering the sofas). I also allow small children on the home exchange but I will remove reachable breakables to the upstairs and gate the stairs as they will not be in use so you can relax more.

EXTRA NOTE: We are only interested in home exchanges within Ireland for Summer 2021. We are new to Intervac but totally love the concept of exchanging homes with others for holidays, sharing and opening up our home for others, making new friends, showing people our locality, learning about different cultures and seeing the world in this way. It's such a great concept and so resourceful! I just wish we had discovered Intervac sooner. And we hope people will feel very welcome and comfortable and at home in our home. A home from home! We shall treat your home with the utmost respect and care.

Onde estamos e o que há por perto

Aeroporto mais próximo: Cork International Airport and Kerry Airport - approx 90km/ approx 60km

The peninsula is popular with walkers, and the Sheep's Head Way is an 88 km long-distance trail which follows old tracks and roads around the peninsula from Bantry to the headland and back. The trail is very accessible and is well signposted. The route combines low and rugged hills with coastline and cliffs. It’s one of Ireland’s best-loved walking routes, and the perfect place to immerse yourself in life along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

There are lots of things to do in Bantry and around the Sheep’s Head as you explore this beautiful part of the world. There is a farmer's market every Friday in nearby Bantry 6km away. There are wonderful new supermarkets SuperValu and Lidl in Bantry and a great health food shop called Organico. Our house is approx 95km km from the nearest city of Cork and Cork airport. Cork is considered the gourmet capital of Ireland. Our house is a great base in a perfect location for exploring the other nearby peninsulars too; Mizen Head with popular, beautiful beaches Barley Cove and Ballyrisode and Beara peninsular - more beaches and stunning scenery. West Cork is home to some famous megalithic stone circles like Drombeg. There are islands you can take a ferry to for day trips. There are lots of castles, ruins and some great old houses to see. There are also lots of colourful villages - and fishing villages along the coast - to explore and bars & restaurants (Covid restrictions permitting). This area is famous for fresh seafood.

There is lots of sailing in West Cork especially in the village of Schull and Baltimore. There is kayaking, cycling and hiking to name a few activities. It is a wonderful area for the great outdoors and nature lovers. There are whale watching boat tours and West Cork is home to harbour seals, grey seals and dolphins. It is a great area for bird-watchers too. There are farmer's markets in Bantry, Schull and Skibbereen. There is a golf course in Glengarriff. County Kerry is not that far away so you could do a day trip or overnight there too. For classical music lovers there is an annual world-renowned international chamber music festival in Bantry called the West Cork Chamber Music Festival for a week at the end of June/ start of July - founded and run by my Father! You can check it out here https://www.westcorkmusic.ie/ There is also a Literary Festival in mid-July for any budding writers out there! The Masters of Tradition Festival takes place in August. You will find that lots of writers, artists, musicians and craftspeople make their home in West Cork.

Texto de apresentação da família

My name is Gráinne and I am a single-mum to Hazel (18) and Josh (14). We are quite a creative household. I am a writer and singer-songwriter. My daughter Hazel is into arts & crafts and is also a singer-songwriter. My son Josh loves basketball and gaming. I grew up on a farm in this valley where I live. My family live nearby.

We have 3 cats and a dog. Our cats are called Mojo, Smudge and Jackie. Our dog is called Tiva. During a house swap I would arrange to have them put in a kennel and cattery for your stay.

Estilo de vida

We are creative and easy-going and not in any rush! During the pandemic we have kept ourselves busy with some house projects and creativity. We like to walk in the nearby mountains. We like to cook and read and watch a good series. We live a fairly low-key life. We would like to travel more but the pandemic stopped us just as we were getting started!! We love exploring new places be it countryside or town or city. We love beaches, mountains, woods, museums, galleries, markets, cafés, restaurants, sightseeing, shops, walking, different cultures, architecture. We are very curious and like to have new experiences and to meet new people.
