House in Bellingham Wa, between Seattle and Vancouver BC

Our home is a cottage-style house in a residential neighborhood with views of Bellingham Bay & the San Juan Islands. The master bedroom has a king bed, its own porch, AC, and bathroom ensuite. The other 2 bedrooms (with queen beds) share a full bathroom; all living areas are on the same floor, with washer/dryer in the basement.  There is a deck and garden just outside the kitchen (remodeled in 2016), and we spend summer evenings here, watching the sun set. We enjoy cooking and barbecuing, and have fresh herbs and berries growing in the garden, as well as apple, pear and plum trees.

Bellingham is 1 1/2 hrs north of Seattle and and 1 hr south of Vancouver B.C., with 90,000 population and a large university (16,000 students), surrounded by sea, farmland, and mountains.  It is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer and fall, with hiking, boating, biking, bird watching, golf, swimming, and city parks available. Western Washington University has an excellent outdoor sculpture collection, and you can walk to the nationally-known Bellingham Festival of Music (www.bellinghamfestival.org) classical performances there in July. There are outdoor music performances in the parks throughout the summer (jazz, R&B, bluegrass). There is a large farmers' market every Saturday, and a smaller one on Wednesdays, with many fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and crafts. You can also find many restaurants/cafes, wine bars and local ale houses.

You can use our car to get to hiking trails (Mount Baker area has fantastic trails) or to explore the region, or to drive to Seattle or Vancouver, or go a bit further north to Whistler/Blackcomb, the internationally known ski resort. You could also take the train to Seattle and spend the day (the train station is near our home), take a ferry to the San Juan Islands, do a day-long whale watching trip, rent bikes or kayaks, or take an evening cruise with a local history talk.

To get to Bellingham, there is a short flight from Seattle. Or you could rent a car and drop it off locally, or you can take a shuttle bus from the Seattle airport to Bellingham--we have friends who can then bring you to our home. We exchanged with a Scottish family a few years ago, and we all had a great time. We are excited to return to home exchange, and hope to do another exchange in 2020 or 2021.

Estilo de vida

Bellingham is on several "best places to live in the U.S." lists, because of its scenery, parks, many outdoor activities, its university, and its proximity to Seattle and Vancouver, and Whistler-Blackcomb (site of 2010 Winter Olympics).  Our first exchange family (they are experienced exchangers) claimed it was their best vacation because of the diverse activities available, the weather (it is beautiful in summer and early fall) and friendly people.
Outdoor activities include visiting local parks and beaches, hiking, biking, river rafting, boating on bay and lakes, fishing, tennis, golf, whale-watching, and bird-watching.  In summer, outdoor music is in the parks, and outdoor weekly movies are shown in Fairhaven.
DAY TRIPS can include:
Whale-watching boats leave from Bellingham (see www.orcaphotos.com). See orcas, eagles, seals, herons, and more. There are also ferries to San Juan Islands and Victoria, B.C. (Canada).
Day hikes: we have many hiking books. You can drive to Chuckanut Mtn. in 15 min., and the Cascade Range (Mt. Baker) in about one hour.
Seattle: Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum & Olympic Sculpture Park, baseball and soccer games, and busy shops, waterfront and ferries.
Vancouver, B.C. A high density city with restaurants from many cultures.
Whistler, B.C., site of the 2010 Winter Olympics.  We ski and hike here; there are many summer activities at this upscale resort, including restaurants and shopping.
Wine Country: Washington state is a major wine-producing area in the U.S., second only to California. You can drive Highway 20 through the beautiful North Cascades Park to Eastern Washington wine country.
